Our Story
the journey began when I first visited and fell in love with the Island some 20 years ago.
We holidayed in many hotels across the island until we found a location that was truly unforgettable; our first villa rental in Queen’s fort in 2012.
It was at that time when we discovered not only our love of villa life but also the beauty and location of Queen’s Fort, one of only 3 private bach roads in Barbados.
During our 2017 Christmas holiday, we discovered something that would change our holidays here forever. Walking along Queen’s Fort to the beach to meet friends staying in The Colony Club hotel, just for nostalgias sake, rather than going straight to the front entrance of the hotel. We noticed a tired old house in much need of some love to make it a home again. I knew right then that this was the villa. With a little bit of love and design, it could become my vision of a great and comfortable holiday home and one that we could share.
My passion for architecture and background in interior design would help bring my vision to life.
After some research and due diligence, I finally got the keys in October 2018. On the very same day, we got to work — there wasn’t a moment to lose!
I commenced with my team of local tradesmen to start the exciting works of transforming Queen’s Tower to what it is today. And there are still further plans to put in place to continue enhancing the gardens and house to make every stay here more and more luxurious and enjoyable.
the History of Queen’s Fort
Queen’s Tower was built 45 years ago
Queen’s Tower was built 45 years ago by Larry Warren for his family, his first house design after studying architecture at the University of Manitoba. A native Barbadian, Larry Warren is one of the most renowned architects on the island. His work includes the Sandy Lane estate. He also owns the historical St Nicholas Abbey.
St Nicholas Abbey is a 350-year-old plantation rich with history. It’s the only active steam mill on the island that still produces rum with locally grown sugarcane – a must visit!
They also recently financed and constructed the heritage railway that operates from St. Nicholas Abbey. You can catch a ride on the fully-restored British steam trains that travel to Cherry Hill and see the amazing views over the East Coast.
Larry, his wife Anne, and their two sons lived here for 20 years before selling to Hans Grootenboer who owned the well-known Groots Bar (which is now The Horny Ram).
Groot’s had a large following of locals and visitors on the island and was known for its walls, which were daubed from floor to ceiling with signatures from visitors across the world; including the Rolling Stones, Michael winner, Pavarotti and many famous sports personalities. Han owned Queen’s Tower for a further 21 years until his death in October 2017.
